The 101 Ways to Measure Portfolio Performance by Philippe Cogneau, Georges Hubner

Abstract:
This paper performs a census of the 101 performance measures for portfolios that have been proposed so far in the scientific literature. We discuss their main strengths and weaknesses and provide a classification based on their objectives, properties and degree of generalization. The measures are categorized based on the general way they are computed: asset selection vs. market timing, standardized vs. individualized, absolute vs. relative and excess return vs. gain measure. We show that several categories have been exhausted while some others feature very heterogeneous ways to assess performance within the same sets of objectives.

Keywords: performance measurement, portfolio, funds, Sharpe, alpha, Treynor, market timing

Corporate Innovation

And it must communicate a clear understanding that reasonable risks are acceptable, since they are the handmaidens of progress. On the innovative front, two methods are available for dealing with risk: diversification and cheap failures. They can and should be used in concert.

Overmanaged and Underled | shmula

As I mature and become more aware of the subtleties of business, I am slowly learning the meaning of Leadership.  For most of my career and, in part, my education, I have aimed to be become the best — technically — in the field of Operations, Logistics, Supply Chain, Lean Manufacturing, and Six Sigma.  I haven’t achieved my aim — and, indeed, view that pursuit as a lifetime goal — but I am now at a place where I feel some sense of achievement in those areas that I mentioned and have become painfully aware of those areas where I need to grow.

The Gemba is the Dojo | shmula

What is The Gemba? What is The Dojo?

Gemba is the Japanese word for “the actual place” or “the place where virtue or truth is found.” In a business setting, Gemba is often referred to “the place where value is added.” For example, in a factory, the production floor is where value is added.

The Dojo is a place of training. The Dojo is formally a place where martial arts is taught, but generically refers to any place where teaching and learning happens. Historically, the learning and teaching had to do with more holy or spiritual teaching.

Learning by Simulations: Distribution Calculator

When performing statistical tests, one needs to check whether the test statistic is greater or less than the critical value. While most statistical programms automatically create a default table of critical values, it is sometime necessary to look into distribution tables. However, retrieving a critical value from a distribution table is prone to mistakes due to the symmetry considerations which have been taken into account to reduce the volume of the printed tables.

Free Gantt Chart Template for Excel

A gantt chart is a common tool for project planning and keeping track of the status of individual tasks within a project. This type of chart was invented in 1910 by a mechanical engineer named Henry Gantt, and there are now a great many software tools that use gantt charts in project planning. Excel is a popular tool for creating Gantt charts, but for more advanced project management activities, you may need a tool such as Microsoft Project or a project management add-in for Excel. However if you want to create a project schedule and you know how to copy/paste/insert/delete in Excel, my Gantt Chart Template is a MUCH more cost effective solution, and in my opinion, much easier to use.

111 Ridiculously Obvious Thoughts on SellingOn 24 January 2006, Tom spoke to a group at GE Energy, and he posted seven PPTs and two PDFs for the occasion. Among them were a PowerPoint presentation titled 89 Ridiculously Obvious Thoughts About Selling Stuff, and a PDF document titled "90 Ridiculously Obvious Thoughts on Selling." By 28 January, four days later, the piece had grown into "111 Ridiculously Obvious Thoughts on Selling," and made available on our website as a simple PDF. It was then picked up by our friends at ChangeThis to be produced as a manifesto. Thus, Tom's collection of sales theorems evolved into its final form, which you find below.

Year 2000 problem - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Year 2000 problem (also known as the Y2K problem, the millennium bug, the Y2K bug, or simply Y2K) was a notable computer bug resulting from the practice in early computer program design of representing the year with two digits. This time code ambiguity caused some date-related processing to operate incorrectly for dates and times on and after January 1, 2000 and on other critical dates which were billed "event horizons". Without corrective action, long-working systems would break down when the "...97, 98, 99..." ascending numbering assumption suddenly became invalid. Companies and organizations worldwide checked, fixed, and upgraded their computer systems.

Anger management - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term Anger management commonly refers to a system of psychological therapeutic techniques and exercises by which someone with excessive or uncontrollable anger can control or reduce the triggers, degrees, and effects of an angered emotional state.

One technique for controlling anger is finding agreement with another person rather than a conflict. In some countries, courses in anger management may be mandated by their legal system.

The use of deep breathing and meditation can be used as a means of relaxation. Other interventions include learning empathy, stress management skills, forgiveness, changing how you speak about yourself or others and improving optimism. As the issue of anger varies from person to person, the treatments are designed to be personal to the individual.

Segment the Target Market in Your Business Plan.

Segment the Target Market in Your Business Plan

By: Tim Berry

Published December 1999

The market segmentation concept is crucial to market assessment and market strategy. Divide the market into workable market segments -- age, income, product type, geography, buying patterns, customer needs, or other classifications. Define your terms, and define your market.

Segmentation can make a huge difference in understanding your market. For example, when a local computer store business defines its customer segments as "high-end home office" and "high-technology small business," its segmentation says a lot about its customers. The segmentation helps the company plan focus on the different types of potential customers. When I was consulting for Apple Computer in the mid-1980s, we divided the markets into workable categories, including home, education, small business, large business, and all others. Some other groups in Apple also focused on government as a specific market segment.

Segmentation is important and also difficult.

Enfoirés Official Site : Show 2009 (Page 8)

The Enfoirés 2009 : The Artists list

Around forty artists will be gathered for the Enfoirés 2009 Show in Paris Bercy,
for a highly colorful and emotionally rich show :
However, the names of participating artists
are not made public before concerts.

All the Enfoirés of one given year cannot be necessarily present at all the concerts due to their professional or personal commitments, and last-minute failures to appear are known to happen.

Hence, the Restos du Cœur prefer not to distribute any list of participating artists in order to avoid any potential frustrations, complaints, last-minute ticket exchanges...

Most importantly, the Enfoirés are not a simple juxtaposition of individual singers, musicians, humorists, actors... but rather a homogeneous group that changes at each concert but yet remains the same : talented, enthusiastic, and generous.
Note : Please note that the list will be published after the concerts will start. -->
Les Enfoirés font leur Cinéma gathered 39 Enfoirés in January 2009 at the Palais Omnisports of Paris Bercy, for a colorful and intense show :

Private Label Bottled Water and Word of Mouth Advertising

Private Label Bottled Water and Word of Mouth Advertising

One of the most powerful forms of advertising is word of mouth advertising. In industries like hotel and lodging, spas, banking, law firms and other professional services, a recommendation from a satisfied customer can promote a brand message more effectively than most other forms of advertising.

Word of mouth acts as a testimonial to customer satisfaction and the endorsement of a satisfied customer can be repeated over and over again, conversely, low customer satisfaction can also spread by word of mouth and the results can be devastating. A rule of thumb used by many customer service managers is that satisfaction is repeated to 3 people while dissatisfaction is repeated to 33 people and potential customers.

Advertising and Promotion

Advertising and Promotion: An Integrated Marketing Communications Perspective, 6/e, by Belch and Belch, is the number one text in the Advertising market. As the field of advertising and promotion continues to dramatically change since the dominant days of high-powered Madison Avenue agencies, marketers must look beyond traditional media in order to achieve success. In order to best communicate with consumers, advertisers must utilize a myriad of tools (advertising, public relations, direct marketing, interactive/Internet marketing, sales promotion, and personal selling); Belch/Belch is the first book to reflect the shift from the conventional methods of advertising to the more widely recognized approach of implementing an integrated marketing communications strategy.

From what to order and how to order it to what to wear and how to wear it, the essentials of "metrosexual" savoir faire.
The old-fashioned, repressed, un-moisturized man has been banished to the hinterlands and a new breed is taking center stage. He is a man of style, sophistication, and security, just as strong and confident as his predecessor, but far more diverse in his interests, his tastes, and, most importantly, his self-image. He may be seen at an NBA game one night and an art gallery opening the next. Able to navigate any social setting, he is informed, influential, intriguing, and very much in vogue these days. He is the new male ideal: the metrosexual man.
So how can the average Joe keep up with this new version of cool? How should he behave, what shoes should he wear, and what CDs should he have in his collection? Answers to these questions and so many other pressing concerns can be found in The Metrosexual Guide to Style.

Rebate (marketing) - From the free encyclopedia

A rebate is an amount paid by way of reduction, return, or refund on what has already been paid or contributed. It is a type of sales promotion marketers use primarily as incentives or supplements to product sales. The mail-in rebate (MIR) is the most common. A MIR entitles the buyer to mail in a coupon, a receipt and barcode in order to receive a check for a particular amount, depending on the particular product, time, and often place of purchase. Rebates are offered by either the retailer or the manufacturer of the chosen product.

The Top 4 Misapplications of the 80/20 Rule - Stepcase Lifehack

The Top 4 Misapplications of the 80/20 Rule

20071202-8020Rule.png

Eighty percent of the output comes from twenty percent of the input. That is basically a summary of the Pareto Principle, or as it is more commonly known, the 80/20 Rule. The rule comes from Vilfredo Pareto, an Italian economist who noticed that 80% of Italy’s wealth was in the hands of 20% of the population.

The 80/20 Rule points out the imbalance of effects. Just as one person might have several times the wealth as another, one hour spent on a critical project might be worth $10,000 while another might only be worth $20. The goal when using the 80/20 Rule is to maximize the small and powerful twenty percent and reduce the wasteful eighty percent.

Despite the popularity of the rule, few people seem to understand it. I’ve seen hundreds of misapplications and confusions spouted throughout the web and in print. Some of these errors are due to not understanding what the rule means. Others are just my opinion of unfair attacks on an otherwise useful principle.

80/20 kuralı ve en çok yapılan 4 hata.

25 (Free) 3D Modeling Applications You Should Not Miss | Tools

3d modeling tools

Technically, 3 Dimensions refers to objects that are constructed on three plans (X, Y and Z). The process of creating 3D graphics can be divided into three basic phases: 3D modeling, 3D animation and 3D rendering.

Three dimensional (3D) computer graphics are widely used and they are almost too common to see anywhere, let it be movies, products designs, advertisements, etc. Although they are commonly seen, that doesn’t mean they are easily created. In order to interactively control a 3D object, it must be created in a 3D authoring tool which usually cost a lot to a non-professional user.

A 3D model is usually originated on the computer by engineer using some kind of 3d modeling tools. Creating 3D models is not easy and the software alone can cost a fortune Therefore, we thought it might be interesting to check out the availability of open source 3D modeling tools out there. Crawling from sites to sites, reading through end users comments and feedback, we bring you 25 Free 3D Modelling Applications You Should Not Miss. Full list after jump.
